Like all the old Balinese realms, Tabanan has a mountain to-the sea axis –an ordering of the physical landscape that mirrors the ordering of the cosmos, with major points marked by temples and the wealthy regency in Bali. Several villages located to the southwest of Tabanan regency are especially rich in rice-field wide areas. The first stop is Belalang village around one hour, 18 km from west Denpasar or 33 km from Nusa Dua. The first stop to open the canvas ceiling, enable one to stand-up whilst driving through. Desa Belalang is first unspoiled village one finds on the tour. Like the other villages there are always split-gates (candi bentar) which have the function of both the border and as welcoming gates. From there on we drive from a place to another, still within natural places in Bali. While driving through, the standing-up guest could witness the traditional house compounds and the villagers’ way of life.
About 5 minutes, or 3 km after Belalang, we arrive at the village of Pejaten in the district of Tabanan, famous for its pottery, 77% of the villagers live from making traditional roof tiles, ceramics and now painted in bright reds and greens, to replicas of glazed Chinese ceramics.
The latter are the result of an initiative taken by Dutch potters during the 1980’s. Since 1970’s a Chinese painter from Tabanan, the late Kay it, introduced the production of terracotta tiles decorated with figures of gods, goddesses and wayang heroes in relief. These were mainly used for interior decoration of restaurants and shops in the tourist areas of South Bali.
After passing this tiles villages one encounters two unique and beautiful temples. One is build under a bridge by a bank of a river, which is an important part for the village temples as the source of holly water (tirta) and as the place for purification rites. Here, we can stop for 5 minutes. The other is a big, well-carved and decorated village temples. The inner courtyard perch two merus (Balinese pagoda) one of them is of 11 tiers, a good place to stop for making pictures. The temple is dedicated for Brahma and Wisnu as well, because this is a combination of Pura Desa and Pure Puseh.
The village of Kerambitan, 10 minutes after the temple is in particular, noted for its tektekan performances. This is, in fact, not a dance, but a precession of men with giant wooden cowbells with huge clappers around their necks and bamboo split drums. They traditionally marched around the village during an epidemic or great drought to chase away the evil spirits and bring fertility to the area
The south side of Mt. Batukaru, Gadungan village area offers fine views. About halfway up the slope of towering 2276 meters high Mt. Batukaru located in the village of Dalang, perches a memorial tower of Lieutenant-Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, a commander of the nationalist forces fighting against the Dutch, who was killed with his 94 men on November 20th, 1946. They fought till death, and their behavior is commonly compared with that of the ruler of Badung and his family in 1906, so that the event is also referred to as a puputan.. His name has been also given to the international airport of Bali.
At the end of a step road north of Meliling past Mundukmalang, we will stop for delicious Indonesia Lunch for 60 minutes in the middle of Cocoa & Coffee plantation – about 800 m above sea level – in the one of Bali Tropical Safaris’ traditional Balinese compound build by local craftsmen and enjoy the ambience and feel the silent of the untouchable rainforest.
Through the muddy trek in the middle of the tropical rainforest, there is a tiny road goes down leading across steep rice terrace and small villages on the way back. Here, you can feel the adventure of 4x4 vehicle while enjoying the great scenery along the way. There are some nice areas for photo taking to Denpasar passing Tabanan, Kediri, Pandak Gede villages.
The next stop is where you will be relaxed and rejuvenated your body, mind and spirit for 2,5 hours.
